LVWAC International Educator of the Year Awards

The International Educator Of The Year Award is a prestigious recognition in which outstanding teachers from the Clark County School District, CCSN, UNLV and Nevada State College are honored for their superlative contributions to international education in the performance of their normal duties.

The group will receive a complimentary trip to India to learn more about its political, economic, and health care systems, to reward them for their excellence, and give the winners the tools to be even more successful in the classroom upon their return.

Speakers:

Bret Whipple, Chairman, Nevada Board of Regents - Regent Bret O’Neil Whipple was elected to the Board of Regents in 2002 and is the representative for Clark County, District 2. He was recently elected to his second term as chair for the Board of Regents and serves on the ad hoc Technology Committee.

A practicing attorney in the state of Nevada, with license to practice in Arizona, Regent Whipple’s primary area of concentration is criminal defense. His experience in the field of law is wide-ranging. It includes numerous jury trials, preliminary hearings and an “oral argument” before the Nevada Supreme Court.

Regent Whipple and his wife Paige are the proud parents of daughter Hope and son Shea. In addition to being a successful lawyer, husband and father, Regent Whipple is also a certified public accountant licensed to practice in Arizona, New York, Pennsylvania and Nevada.

Regent Whipple graduated from the Wharton School of Business in 1988 and speaks fluent German.

Somy Ali, Actress & Activist - Because of her passion for social and political issues and events, actress and model Somy Ali decided to expand her career to include writing and journalism. In November 1999, she moved to the United States and she received a Bachelor's degree in psychology which she finished in three years. Following that she pursued a Masters degree in print journalism at the University of Miami.

While attending the University of Miami, Somy developed an interest in documentary films, therefore left UM in 2003 to attend the New York Film Academy. She obtained a degree in film making, direction, script writing, and editing.

Some of her first projects included short films on Abortion, Domestic Violence, and Teenage suicide.

For the past year, Somy has been involved with women's rights issues in South Asia. She is working towards bringing the plight of rape and domestic violence victims to media's attention.
